The price of a Picasso loan Musée Picasso director reveals the cost of borrowing

Anne Baldassari defends the Musée Picasso’s loan fees
PARIS. The director of the Musée Picasso has defended her decision to organise an international touring exhibition to raise money for the Paris museum’s renovation. Anne Baldassari, the museum’s director, told Le Monde: “Producing exhibitions abroad is our only resource. Japanese museums suggested remuneration for loans, which has been a practice of US and European museums for a while.” She added that money received also helps finance conservation and acquisitions.
Baldassari revealed the museum raised between €1m and €3.5m a year since 2008 from the touring exhibition “Masterpieces from the Picasso Museum”. It has visited eight cities so far, including Madrid, Helsinki and Tokyo. “We have made [in total] €16m,” she said, adding that the museum levied different charges for loans. “The tariffs vary according to the number of works, the team [involved] and the expertise.”
In 2005 the museum lent paintings and sculptures to Berlin’s Neue Nationalgalerie exhibition “The Private Picasso” for a €700,000 fee, a museum spokeswoman confirmed.
The Musée Picasso has over 5,000 works, including 3,700 works on paper, in its collection. Closed for renovation since late 2009, it hopes to raise €23m towards the €45m refurbishment of its home, a 17th-century townhouse. The ministry of culture will provide €19m, which “leaves €3.5m, which I’m certain we’ ll find”, says Baldassari. The museum is due to reopen in spring 2013.
Baldassari’s comments follow the publication earlier this year of a report by the General Association of Curators of French Public Collections expressing concern about cuts in state funding for French museums. Over 1,000 curators signed the document that reportedly criticised the “extreme free-market logic” increasingly adopted by national museums, a barb aimed at the Musée Picasso.
“My aim is to find ways of reopening this museum to the biggest audience possible,” said Baldassari, adding: “Our exhibitions are not mercantile, cynical or without value.”
The director was recently at the centre of another furore when she refused to loan 12 works to the Kunsthaus Zürich for its 100th anniversary Picasso show, which closed in January. Baldassari said that some of these pieces were too fragile to travel.
She also added that there was a “loan freeze” implemented by the French government in 2009 for works that were not already on tour.

THE IDEA TO CREATE ONE MORE PRIVATE GALLERY

Surfing through the vast expanses of the Internet suddenly stumbled across very interesting question of an active art gallery director: what could attract visitors to some private gallery in Moscow? He did not ask about the gallery, where he was a head, but of some private one which he was asked to run by the owners in the nearest future.

Not an easy question to be answered, because now in the capital of Russia there is a significant number of private galleries, some of them with very non-artistic names, for example, Winery, Garage, while others, personal, by the names and on behalf of the famous artists - Glazunov, Tsereteli, Shilov. But, that's bad luck, an attempt to determine how many of such galleries now in Moscow, didn’t provide a result. At the same time it turned out that even LiveInternet do not show statistics of the virtual galleries in RuNet, but it is not obliged..

Nevertheless all of us can agree that the more places exist for the dissemination of true artistic creations - the better. And undoubtedly, in any case it’s necessary to determine what the most fans are now interested in contemporary art. From the  whole set of preferences we have to choose the most vivid parts attracting their attention. Then you can build a vision for the future gallery, which will form the basis from several particular items, ranging from the appearance to the accompanying service and may be even industries.

It turbed out that there were not so many but some versatile respondents for this answer: the head of the department, a poet, a freelance artist, a composer, an art Coucher and a brand manager. All of them came to the conclusion that  the only exposition is too weak attempt to draw the audience. Therefore it was proposed to make several additional formats - a school of painting, may be a design bureau, a baguette boutique and especially a creative club with a restaurant and even a wine shop. It would be nice to issue some discount card, but the most basic - to convey information about holding solo exhibitions in a proper way, including dates when the artist will come personally. The exhibitions must be dynamic and organized as often as possible.

Good idea, undoubtedly,  to use also an arcenal of modern technology: for example, some vuisual kinetic paintings on displays that are created on the spot, accompanied by  relevant music.

The auhors of these ideas didn’t mention Internet media, but who now doesn’t place their own websites, where with the help of some small  favicons the galleries can be connected with the social networks. Anybody  can invite newborn and unknown artists, offering to vote for their creations, as the Saatchi online does, and to form in such a way their future expositions and collections.

Unfortunately, gallery owners and dealers hide the secrets of their knowledge which were not shared. But may be the person  already working as the gallery director, is informed in a due course about the opinions of the experts related to contemporary art, and even knows the names of famous  collectors to be familiar to their secret passions. Therefore, if ...
a team of real enthusiasts will be properly recruited,
the opinions of the various branches professionals from  the designer to the advertiser (do not forget about the artists themselves!) will be taken into consideration,
one or two non-trivial tricks will be applied to draw attention to the ptivate gallery,
- then you can begin to create its name.
To do this, nowadays there are only two ways: a laborious daily work for long-term period or
expensive and grandiose opening accompanied by several scandals with known public persons.

New methods of Art Advertisement

Twitter — a new place for Art promotion

In New-York the new way of Art advertisiment through Rwitter  appeared. They say that there is a lot of perspectives in this method for development.
The idea to promote the exhibition of George Condo"Mental States" and attract attantion to his works is really original. The organizer of this process is the ads agency Droga5. The general director Andrew Essex claimed that it's the attempt to make application for critiques of art pieces in real time.
Together with the New Museum and Ad Agency one of the most famous publication of the US - The New York Tomes - takes part in this project. Its opinion on Art will be added by the opinion of the ordinary people.
This action will run when in the special places in the underground and in publications some of the artist popular works appear. And two main phrases appear: from official publications with excitements and from ordinary people in Twitter. In this case it'll be clear if the opinions are different or not. They supposed that it's very successful idea for discussing on the most problems of other social events and problems.

Women's exposition
